Curling 101

New to Curling?

Curling is a game of strategy, skill, teamwork, and tradition. The goal is simple: deliver your stones closer to the center of the target, called the house, than your opponent.

A traditional curling team has four players, and each player takes a turn delivering stones while teammates sweep to help control the stone’s speed and direction. Curling is easy to learn, but there’s always something new to master—which is part of what makes it so much fun.

Just as important as the game itself is the community around it. Curling is known for sportsmanship, camaraderie, and welcoming new players. At Circle City Curling Club, you don’t need any previous experience to get started.

Want a Little More Detail?

This short introduction covers the basic rules, how stones are delivered and swept, and how a curling game comes together.

Different Ways to Deliver

Most curlers learn using a traditional sliding delivery, but that's not the only way to play. Stick delivery allows a curler to deliver the stone from a standing position using a delivery stick rather than sliding from the hack. It's part of the same game, and stick and sliding curlers can play right alongside one another.

Curling Etiquette

Curling has a long tradition of sportsmanship and respect. A few simple habits will help you feel at home on the ice:

  • Start and finish with a handshake. Before the game, introduce yourself and wish the other team “Good Curling.”
  • Celebrate good shots. Great curling deserves recognition, no matter which team made the shot.
  • Keep the ice clean. Always wear clean shoes on the ice and avoid bringing dirt or debris onto the playing surface.
  • Be ready when it’s your turn. Curling moves best when players are prepared to deliver or sweep as soon as needed.
  • Stay clear of the other team. Avoid distracting a player while they are delivering a stone and give the opposing team room to play.
  • Help keep the game moving. Pay attention to the flow of play and be ready when your skip calls your shot.
  • Enjoy the social side of curling. Curling has a strong tradition of teams gathering together after a game.

Don’t worry about memorizing everything before you play. Our instructors will walk you through the rules, etiquette, and basics when you come to a Learn to Curl event.
